It was 13 picks before Grayson Ladd went up on the board as the first defenseman selected in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection. While four defenseman would wind up going in round one, it got me thinking about when was the last time a defenseman didn't wind up going in the top-10.
The answer? You have to go all the way back to 2001 in a draft that would feature the genesis of what would go on to be arguably the best NHL Draft crop in history. Ironic, perhaps, that it's the very same year these 2017 OHL Priority Selection players were born in.
Now that the page has been turned on this '01 crop, the focus shifts squarely to an '02 age group that's showing more promise to make an impact early on in the draft.
